Record breaking tourism and new developments prove that Mexico is well on its way to becoming a worldwide destination hotspot.

Setting a new record with more than 29 million international visitors in 2014, a 20.5 percentage  increase from 2013, Mexico is well on its way to becoming a world-wide tourism hotspot. According to the Mexico Tourism Board, 8.8 million passengers on international flights were recorded in 2014, equivalent to an increase of 10.7 percentage over the first half of 2013; this result was accompanied by a 7.3 percentage increase in the number of international flights observed during the same period.

Data found from the end of the first semester of 2014 by the Migration Policy Unit of the Mexican Secretariat of the Interior (SEGOB) revealed that passenger arrivals by air to Mexico, were as follows: Americans (56.5 percentage ), Canadians (15.3 percentage ), and Brazilians (2.1 percentage ).

Tourist arrivals by air, Mexico’s main segment of tourism, increased by 10.8 percent in 2014 to the previous year, going from 6.5 to 7.2 million tourists. The flow of border tourism grew by 35.5 percentage, registering 6 million tourists, compared to 4.5 million in 2013. In the first six months cruise visitors increased 26.3 percent; rose from 2.4 million in 2013 to 3 million in 2014. In the first quarter of 2014, international visitors increased from: Russia (3.9 percentage), Colombia (15.3 percentage), Peru (7.2 percentage), China (32 percentage) and Venezuela (16.6 percentage). In turn, visitors from UK increased 3 percent, growing from 82,000 in January-March 2013, to 84,400 in the first quarter of 2014.

The Bank of Mexico (Banxico) highlighted that the tourists by air increased 10.8 percent, from 8.4 to 9.3 million, in the period from January to August of 2014, and as to border tourism, an increase of 32.6 percent was observed, reaching 8.5 million passengers, compared with 6.4 million tourists from 2013. Banxico also reported that foreign exchange earnings from international tourists in the first eight months of 2014 grew 18.1 percent over the same period of 2013.

The momentum experienced by Mexico is continuing to build as 2015 is seeing the opening of several new properties, attractions and partnerships all over the country. We’ve highlighted a few major openings that have been recently reported by Emma Weissmann of www.travelagewest.com.

Properties

Teoticamp, Teotihuacan, Mexicoco

This “ecotouristic” Teoticamp complex, was developed to attract visitors to the ancient city of Teotihuacan. The complex, located near the archaeological UNESCO World Heritage Site northeast of Mexico City, is having its grand opening in May and will include a new hotel, camping area, restaurant, multiple-use hall and an interactive farm.

AMResorts’ Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya and Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort & Spa

There are currently 24 resort options on the East and West coast of Mexico that are within the Unlimited Vacation Club by AMResorts umbrella, for members to visit. Akumal Riviera Maya and Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort & Spa are two resorts that the vacation club is set to open in Mexico by the end of the year.

Both Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya, a 434-room adults-only resort, and the 169-room Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort & Spa, geared toward travelers looking to have a modern, trendy and “social experience,” are scheduled to open in November 2015.

Luna Liquida Boutique Hotel, Puerto Vallarta

The Luna Liquida, opened earlier this year. This boutique hotel is located near the popular Malecon (boardwalk) in Puerto Vallarta. The property features five villas and provides each guest with a personal “Ambassador of Experiences,” who will plan a customized agenda that can include everything from guided tours to day trips in Puerto Vallarta.

Hyatt Ziva, Los Cabos

The Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos is set to re-open this July, after nearly a year of renovations and repairs due to disaster brought on by Hurricane Odile last September. The Hyatt Ziva Puerta Vallarta celebrated its grand opening this past February.

ATTRACTIONS

“The Nickelodeon Experience” by Karisma Hotels & Resorts

In the months coming, families will be able to sip on slime smoothies and party with SpongeBob Squarepants, Dora the Explorer and several other beloved Nickelodeon characters during the “Nickelodeon Experience” while vacationing at Azul Hotels, set to debut in July.

The unique family-friendly experience has been developed through a partnership between Karisma Hotels & Resorts and Viacom Media, and will be available at Azul Beach Hotel, Azul Sensatori Hotel and Azul Fives Hotel in the Riviera Maya this summer.

Convention Center, Hard Rock Hotel Vallarta

According to a statement made by Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau, The Hard Rock Hotel Vallarta will complete construction on a 12,900-square-feet meeting space this summer. In addition to the meeting space, the convention center, which is being built from the ground up, will also feature four breakout rooms.

Los Muertos Beach Revamp, Puerto Vallarta

Los Muertos beach in Puerto Vallarta will be receiving a revamp in 2015, according to Miguel Andres Hernandez Arteaga, director of the Convention & Visitors Bureau of Puerto Vallarta.

The Puerto Vallarta CVB, in conjunction with the Estate Tourism Ministry and the federal government, are investing $150 million to reconstruct the beach’s boardwalk, main avenue and pier. Eighty percent of the construction will be completed by the end of the year.
