Abercrombie & Kent Sets Out In Search Of The Kermode ‘Spirit’ Bears In Canada With Mark Carwardine 8th – 14th September 2012
January 26, 2012Abercrombie & Kent has teamed up with wildlife photographer and acclaimed conservationist Mark Carwardine to launch an exclusive trip to Princess Royal Island to see the rare Kermode Bears of British Columbia.
Departing on the 8th September 2012, the itinerary will track this unique all-white species of black bear, only found on Princess Royal and the neighbouring islands. Due to their pale and ghostly hue, these creatures are often referred to as ‘Spirit Bears’ and have been revered by Native Americans for generations.
A short seaplane flight from Vancouver will take travellers to the King Pacific Lodge, a luxury floating resort moored in the shelter of Barnard Harbour. Positioned and designed to capture the spectacular views of the wilderness, the lodge has vast windows which immerse guests in their surroundings. Mark Carwardine and a local guide will accompany the group throughout one of the largest coastal temperate rain forests in the world in search of the majestic Spirit Bears. Exploring the mossy, misty and impossibly green depths of this densely forested region, the group will follow the bears’ trails and closely observe them in their natural habitat; catching fish from the streams and lumbering around the land. After days of hiking and kayaking amongst the thick foliage and rocky terrain, guests can retreat to the lodge’s spa or spend the evening searching the night skies with the available high-powered telescope.
