Marriott Vacation Club Timeshare Resorts are Leaving a “Green” Legacy

November 1, 2010 in Lifestyle News, News, Timeshare News, Travel News

Marriott Vacation Club is teaming up with Audubon International to further the “greening” of its resorts in North America and the Caribbean region through the Audubon Green Leaf Eco-Rating Program for Hotels. With 28 resorts currently enrolled, Marriott’s signature timeshare brand expects to have all 43 resorts in the region participating in the program by next year.

“Our resorts have been utilizing green practices for years and the Audubon Green Leaf Eco-Rating Program will take it a step further by providing consistency through a respected environmental group like Audubon International,” said Dirk Schavemaker, senior vice president of resort operations for Marriott Vacation Club. “By enrolling our resorts in the Green Leaf Program, we’re confirming our enduring commitment to the environment, our communities and our Owners and guests who stay at our resorts.”

As an extension of Marriott Vacation Club’s current Green Initiative program, the Audubon Green Leaf Eco-Rating Program combines environmental awareness and education with best management practices tailored to the lodging industry. In order to achieve a “Green Leaf” rating, resorts must meet requirements for water quality, water conservation, waste minimization, resource conservation and energy efficiency. After a review of the environmental checklist, a verification audit is conducted and resorts receive a rating – from one to five “Green Leafs.”

“We’re pleased to have Marriott Vacation Club work with us to better protect and sustain our land, water, wildlife, and other natural resources,” said Fred Realbuto, Director of U.S. Green Leaf Operations at Audubon International. “Our program is unique in that it is international in scope, uses a standardized process for evaluating environmental performance, provides environmental education and conducts visits to verify eco-rated practices.”

With average occupancy rates over 90 percent, Marriott Vacation Club resorts in North America and the Caribbean region collectively welcomed over 696,000 guests through their doors in 2009.

“By promoting sustainable tourism, we have the opportunity to educate our Owners and guests while protecting our most valuable resources and ensuring a more environmentally-friendly future – a true win-win for everyone,” said Schavemaker.

This latest endeavor is part of Marriott Vacation Club’s larger Green Initiative which began at its corporate headquarters with continued roll-out to its resorts worldwide. In addition to these most recent steps, each Marriott Vacation Club resort has established its own “green team” which manages its environmental efforts. In 2009, the brand demonstrated its continued commitment to green operations by eliminating more waste from landfills through implementing recycled key cards, pens and Forest Stewardship Council certified paper for guest arrival packets at its resorts.

Renaissance Hotels Launches RLife LIVE

November 1, 2010 in Lifestyle News, News, Travel News

Renaissance Hotels (www.renhotels.com) understands its hotel guests are independent-minded and passionate about life.  They are looking for hidden gems and to be “in the know” when it comes to culture and entertainment. To meet the needs of its hotel guests, today, Renaissance Hotels is ushering in a new era in hotel-branded entertainment with the launch of RLife LIVE (www.RLifeLive.com) a large arts platform dedicated to providing its hotel guests and local patrons an up close and personal look into culinary arts, design, entertainment and more. The program launches first with music and will feature an eclectic fleet of emerging artists on the verge of superstardom at various Renaissance Hotels throughout 2010 and into 2011.

The RLife LIVE program gives Renaissance guests chance to engage with musical talent on-site at the hotel properties. Renaissance has curated these experiences, with events ranging from intimate acoustic performances, to listening parties, to pre- and post-concert events and meet and greets that go beyond just a quick photo or autograph signing.

In the midst of a renaissance of its own, this year Renaissance Hotels is bringing guests a fresh new way to view the world through unforgettable hotel experiences. From a culinary partnership with the Blue Ribbon Restaurant Group to redesigned room and lobby spaces, special holiday packages such as the Valentine’s Days Sweet Escape with Dylan’s Candy Bar to the launch of RLife LIVE, Renaissance Hotels continues to put its personal stamp on the world of lifestyle hospitality.

“Renaissance Hotels has always had its finger on the pulse of the music industry, but we are thrilled to officially launch the RLife LIVE platform, which will allow us to consistently introduce hotel guests to emerging talent and unique experiences and surprises within the entertainment world,” said Dan Vinh, vice president of marketing for Renaissance Hotels. “This year alone, we hosted a rooftop concert with Mr. Hudson, who then went on to break the top 10 of Billboard’s “Hot 100” with his “Young Forever” hit collaboration with Jay-Z.  Our guests have also enjoyed listening to singer-songwriter Angel Taylor and got up close and personal with Janelle Monae, whose second album has since debuted to critical acclaim.”

To kick off the RLife LIVE program, select New York, San Francisco and Chicago Renaissance properties will host simultaneous performances tonight. These locations were chosen to highlight the uniqueness of the Renaissance portfolio, from the modern New York Times Square property to the historic Stanford Court in San Francisco and the classic Chicago Downtown hotel. They all serve as the perfect backdrop for the diversity of talent represented in this program. Tonight’s line-up will feature:

• Three-time Grammy-award winning R&B artist, Robin Thicke will take the stage at the new R Lounge at the Renaissance New York Times Square Hotel while Sam Ronson and Solange Knowles spin tracks and DJ for the night.

• In Chicago, the Neon Trees, a new band known for their pop hooks and rock influences will perform their hit song “Animal” among others for hotel guests and locals at the Renaissance Chicago Downtown Hotel.

• San Francisco will host hip hop emerging artist K’NAAN as he performs for hotel guests and patrons at the Stanford Court Renaissance San Francisco Hotel.

In 2011, hotel guests who aren’t staying at properties on the artists’ tour stops can still get a
behind-the-scenes glimpse of the artists through the in-room RLife LIVE channel that will showcase exclusive footage of the participating musicians in all Renaissance Hotels in the U.S. The participating artists will also take to the blogosphere at (www.therenaissancelife.com) sharing their favorite personal finds in different markets across the country. Readers can check out a musician’s favorite coffee shop in San Francisco, their recommendation for the best place for jazz in New Orleans or their favorite local second-hand store in Denver.

The artists listed below are the initial talent signed on to participate in the upcoming RLife LIVE series. Renaissance Hotels chose a wide range of musicians representing a cross-section of defined and even undefined musical genres—hip hop, R&B, pop, alternative, and more.  The key is to give exposure to emerging talent on the verge of superstardom and to offer Renaissance guests intimate access to true discovery moments so they can boldly claim “I knew them when…”.

Hyatt and Hersha Development Corporation Announce Agreement for Two Properties in New York

November 1, 2010 in Lifestyle News, News, Travel News

Hyatt Hotels Corporation announced that a Hyatt subsidiary and Hersha Development Corporation (HDC), a privately owned hotel development company, signed long-term franchise agreements for two newly built hotels in Manhattan, catering to individual travelers and scheduled to open in 2011. The Hyatt-branded full service properties developed and owned by HDC and managed by its affiliate, will include a 175-room innovative and design forward hotel in Greenwich Village, near Union Square, and a striking 116-room contemporary hotel in Midtown Manhattan that will be called Hyatt 48Lex.

The announcement reinforces Hyatt’s strategy to be the preferred brand in all the market segments it serves. In the past year, Hyatt opened Andaz Wall Street and Andaz 5th Avenue, which joined the storied Grand Hyatt New York in Manhattan. Like the two Andaz hotels, the two HDC-owned properties will further enhance Hyatt’s presence and positioning in New York City.

“New York City is one of the most important markets in the world, and we are excited to provide guests with additional options when they visit this world-class destination,” said David Tarr, senior vice president of real estate and development for Hyatt Hotels & Resorts. “Hyatt is committed to growing its presence in Manhattan and we are delighted that Hersha is playing such a significant role in this growth. Their deep New York City experience brings additional value.”

Currently under construction, the two new hotels will appeal to the most discerning business and leisure travelers visiting Manhattan. Upon its debut early next year, Hyatt 48Lex, located on Lexington Avenue and 48th Street, will be the first ground-up hospitality project in over a decade to enter the Midtown Manhattan marketplace. The property is intended to provide the most current and functional accommodations for travelers with business in the more than 60 million square feet of office space that immediately surrounds the property.  in addition, Hyatt 48Lex will welcome affluent traveler looking for an intimate, familiar pied-à-terre in New York City. Each room is designed to meet the tastes and preferences of today’s traveler, while offering extraordinary service and guest experience. The hotel will feature floor to ceiling windows in all guest rooms as a result of glass curtain wall construction plus gracious layouts, a butler’s pantry and the latest in-room technology. The hotel will include a hearty American bistro fare restaurant, executive board rooms equipped with the latest audio and video technology, and a fitness center.

The other Hyatt-branded property announced today, slated to open Fall 2011, will be located at 13th Street and 4th Avenue, a block off Union Square, and near Washington Square Park. Union Square is adjacent to some of Manhattan’s preeminent residential and commercial neighborhoods including Chelsea, Gramercy Park, and the Flatiron District. Some of Manhattan’s most celebrated restaurants and popular nightlife spots surround the hotel. The area is extremely popular with residents and tourists alike, and is an activity hub for major hospitals, universities and retail centers. The hotel will offer stunning accommodations to its guests, including private terraces on the second floor, a well-appointed fitness center and an exclusive rooftop lounge. The historic façade and 23 foot ceilings in the lobby will create a grand space for the stylish lounge opening up to 13th Street and a restaurant concept inspired by the local and organic Greenmarket.

“We’re proud to have the opportunity to represent the world-class Hyatt brand and to add to our Manhattan portfolio with these newly built and well located properties,” said Bart Mehta, Chairman of Hersha Development Corporation. “We look forward to building on Hyatt’s momentum in New York by creating further alternatives for travelers to the city.”
