Christel House – A Home away from Home
It’s 5:00 p.m. in Mexico City and 13-yearold Israel Cayetano Median has one goal—to make it home safely from school.
Israel lives in Alvaro Obregon, one of the city’s most dangerous barrios and a place where gangs, drugs and violence thrive. An unpainted two-room shack – where Israel lives with his family – shelters the impoverished child from the dangerous life he longs to avoid.
Israel knows the drill. Once he lets himself in, he completes his homework and chores. Then he waits patiently inside the tiny dwelling for his parents to return from work. No outdoor soccer games, no bicycle rides, no hanging out with
friends. It’s too risky, his family says, for Israel to venture outside to play.
But for this lonely boy, there’s a glimmer of light – at Christel House Mexico, where Israel attends school and escapes the harsh realities of his neighborhood.
